The best-ranked player from Romania in the WTA hierarchy left for Singapore, where she will participate, for the first time, in the Tournament of Champions. The Romanian had two weeks of rest, due to a thigh injury, which forced her to withdraw in the quarter-finals in Beijing.
“I feel very well, I recovered, I did daily treatment, which worked very well for me and now I trained fully, I had no pain, I’m ready and I’m looking forward to getting there. I have normal emotions because I go to a tournament and I always have emotions, but they are positive emotions, I really wanted this year to reach this tournament, so I will try to be totally happy for my participation there and give my best” a said Halep.
The abandonment in Beijing cost Halep the place in the world ranking. She dropped to 3 and will not be seeded in Singapore. Next week it will even reach the fourth in the world. In Singapore, the Wim Fissette-coached player will be assigned to either Serena Williams’ group or Maria Sharapova’s, a player she has yet to defeat.
“For me it is not a very important matter where I am in the ranking, I just like to play, win as many matches as possible and win titles if possible. I don’t think the ranking will matter as much as the game matters what you do during a match and what you can do at a certain tournament,”concluded Halep.
