Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury could still fight next year despite the former being KO’d by Daniel Dubois.
Joshua failed in his attempt to become a three-time heavyweight world champion when he was dropped three times and then stopped in the fifth round by the champion at Wembley. He had hoped victory would propel him into an undisputed clash with the winner of Fury’s Christmas rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.
But although Joshua may never fight for a world title again, he could face his British rival if Fury loses to the Ukrainian for a second time. “I don’t see it being a fight that ends his [Joshua’s] career,’ said Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn. “But as I said, he’s in the final chapter or chapters of the career.
That was a big blow because we fancied winning tonight and fighting the winner of Fury against Usyk. We may end up fighting the loser of that fight, maybe if it’s Tyson Fury. You’ve got the Dubois rematch, you’ve got other fights out there. I think it’s really about returning to the gym and having time off and seeing how you come back with [trainer] Ben [Davison]. A lot depends on how you are performing in the gym.”
