Apartments for Olympic medalists
On Monday, Profbud, a company sponsoring the Polish Olympic team, announced that the apartments would be handed over not only to gold medalist Aleksandra Mirosław, but also to three silver medalists who competed in individual events.
We all know how much work and effort the Polish representatives put in just to be at these games, let alone fight for a place on the podium. We are all the more grateful to Klaudia Zwolińska, Julia Szeremeta and Daria Pikulik for their silver medals. As a token of gratitude, with undisguised pride and joy, we would like to give the Olympic vice-champions from Paris new apartments – announced Paweł Malinowski.
According to the regulations, the gold medalist Aleksandra Mirosław will receive a two-room apartment located in the Warsaw metropolitan area. The Profbud company explained in a comment sent to the business editorial office of tvn24.pl that it will differ in square footage from the apartments of the silver medalists
The gold medalist’s apartment will differ in size from the silver medalists’ apartments. We will discuss further specific information at the turn of the third and fourth quarter. We believe that announcing an investment of this rank and importance requires a special setting,” Profbud told us. The properties are to be furnished by Leroy Merlin.
Interestingly, the volleyball players will not receive apartments; despite their silver medals, the Polish Olympic Committee will award them a financial prize of PLN 1.5 million to be divided along with a painting, a diamond and a holiday voucher. Polish rowers and epee fencers will receive half a million less
The applicant indicated that the legislator’s intention was to exempt from income tax the income of Olympic medalists from all awards, regardless of the circumstances, whether it is a material or cash award, and should only be dependent on the authorized entity and the legal basis for awarding the award,” indicated Małgorzata Samborska, tax advisor from GrantThornton.
It turns out, however, that the term “paid” means that, according to the KIS director, the exemption applies only to monetary receivables. “By using this word, the legislator excluded awards in kind from the exemption. If it had been his will to exempt, on the basis of the above provision, also awards in kind, he would have used the phrase ‘awards received’,” he adds.
According to the lawyer, the position of the KIS director “remains in contradiction with the purposive interpretation”. “The legislator probably simply did not think about material prizes when formulating the provision” – she summed up. Everything indicates that the tax will not apply to Olympians.
