Simona Halep has officially ended the 2021 season, ranked 20th in the WTA , but she will participate in a demonstration tournament in December, an event she confirmed her presence on Monday.
Simona Halep goes to South Africa for the first time
Simona Halep (30 years old) will play in Johannesburg, South Africa, on December 18-19, alongside two other former world leaders – Venus Williams and Martina Hingis, both 41 years old, who conquered together 12 Grand Slam singles titles.
The demonstration tournament is called Africa Cares, and its purpose is to promote tennis in South Africa and combat violence against women.
“It’s official. I’m excited to announce that I will be participating in the Africa Cares tournament in Johannesburg, South Africa on December 18 and 19. The event uses tennis as a means to support the fight against gender-based violence,” wrote Simona Halep on Facebook.
The other participants in this tournament will be announced in the next two weeks.
2021, the year of negative awards for Simona Halep
For the first time since 2012, Halep does not win a WTA trophy in a year.
This is the lowest ranking for Romania’s top female tennis player at the end of the season since 2012, when she was ranked 37th. 2013 was the last year Halep was outside the WTA Top 10.
The Romanian left the WTA Top 10 for the first time in seven and a half years (since February 2014) and missed qualifying for the Tournament of Champions, for the first time since 2014.
