Iga Świątek will have to chase Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian is climbing up
In the world rankings, everything important happened at the WTA Finals. In the prestigious tournament called the fifth “Grand Slam”, Świątek was eliminated in the group, but won two matches, thanks to which she added 400 points to her score.
Interestingly, Sabalenka reached the semifinals with the same score, and in that match she lost to Coco Gauff in two sets. This meant that she would not increase her advantage over the Pole. She will end this year with a 1,046-point advantage over Świątek. It is also known that we will see exactly this number until the first published ranking in 2025. The only thing that may change is the situation of Coco Gauff and Qinwen Zheng, but neither of them is able to threaten the top two of the ranking. The first point changes for the Pole and the Belarusian will only happen at the turn of December and January.
The next start in the WTA competition is planned for the turn of 2024 and 2025. She will play in the United Cup then. Sabalenka will play in Brisbane at a similar time. Taking into account the results from the beginning of last season, Iga will lose 500 points, and the Belarusian 325 points for reaching the final last year.
The most important thing will happen during the Australian Open. And it will be a big chance for Świątek. The Pole did worse in the competition on hard surfaces, but it is her biggest rival who must defend as many as 2 thousand points at the beginning of 2025. The Pole recently only reached the third round, which gives her only 130 points deducted. From the fourth round she can only be “in the plus”. The plan to dethrone the Belarusian is not easy and the earliest it can be realized is January 27, i.e. the first Monday after the Grand Slam competition.
Sabalenka already has reason to be happy today. Thanks to another week at the top, she has moved up in the historic ranking. 13 weeks at the top gives her currently 23rd position. She has just overtaken former Spanish tennis player Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Ana Ivanović. This year she will overtake Jelena Janković (18 weeks). Next, she may overtake Kim Clijsters (20), Maria Sharapova (21), Tracy Austin (21), Naomi Osaka (25) or Dinara Safina (26). This will happen if she does not lose the position of leader to the Pole after the Australian Open. And this means interesting weeks in the competition in women’s tennis. Our tennis player does not have to worry about changing her position on the list of the best leaders. There, she anchored for a long time in seventh place with 125 weeks at the top.
