This will be the Polish player’s debut in the Berlin tournament. She was supposed to play here two years ago, but at the last minute she canceled her trip after her second success at Roland Garros. A year ago, at a similar time, she chose a smaller tournament in Bad Homburg, where she reached the semi-finals. Now it’s finally time to double Berlin.
For the organizers, the arrival of Iga Świątek is excellent news, because first of all, the Pole has shown this season that regardless of the type of surface, she is extremely dangerous. She has already won two WTA 1000 tournaments on hard courts and one on clay courts.
The tournament in Berlin has a prize pool of $922,573 and is one of the better-funded WTA 500 events on the women’s calendar. It’s no wonder that the entire top 10 of the WTA rankings is expected to visit the German capital. This didn’t happen even in the extremely well-attended Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart.
In addition to Iga, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, Angelique Kerber, the 2018 Wimbledon winner, and Naomi Osaka, three-time Grand Slam champion, are also scheduled to play on the Steffi Graf Centre Court.
