We don’t exactly know what it is yet, but there must be something in the water across the menswearverse. Why? Because big fashion guys like Lewis Hamilton just can’t stop (and won’t stop) wearing insane jeans.
Just before the F1 Grand Prix of Singapore (which is revving up on Sunday, btw), the Billion Dollar Man was spotted on the paddocks of the Marina Bay Street Circuit. He smiled at the cameras. He flashed a few thumbs-ups. And he even took a few selfies with fans. Because he’s a nice guy like that! But even though he had some sick Première de Cartier shades on and a one-of-one IWC Portugieser Sidérale Scafusia strapped to his left wrist, it was his pants that we couldn’t stop staring at.
Released as part of Y/Project’s latest collection, the very appropriately-named Collapsed Waist Jeans are fucking mad. While they seem pretty “normal” from a distance, as soon as you take a closer look at Hamilton’s pair, you’ll notice a series of shiny metal buttons across the sides. Y’know, the same ones that you’d usually find on the front of a classic trucker jacket.
The British racing driver fastened ’em all up, but according to the Parisian maison’s website, you’re meant to wear them fully unbuttoned. And while you might think that you’ll end up flashing everyone, the inside of the piece is actually lined with a grey jersey fabric so you’ll be nice and covered up.
And Lewis Hamilton wasn’t the only dude to wear deranged denim this week. On Sunday, Joe Alwyn pulled up to London Fashion Week in JW Anderson’s Twisted Workwear jeans. And just a few days before that, Barry Keoghan headed to the Toronto International Film Festival in a super ripped up pair.
Always wanted to get a wee bit more experimental with your jeans? Well, now you can. Because according to the big menswear boys, there’s never been a better time to do it.
